School Travel Plan

Most children live within walking or cycling distance of their school so it makes sense to encourage parents and children with some school-run alternatives. The government have acknowledged that something needs to change and have set an objective to increase the proportion of 5 – 10-year-olds walking to school.

School Travel Plans (STPs) are a key tool to support with this and are used to manage traffic and transport across towns. A STP is a plan that sets out how a school intends to increase levels of walking, cycling and use of public transport for the journey to and from school.

It is developed through a partnership involving the school, the Council (in particular transport and education), the Police, the health authority and the community. It is based on consultation and engagement with teachers, parents, pupils, governors/boards and other local people.

Travel planning - the act of implementing travel plans - is a real focus. The STP programme aims to encourage, promote and support in working towards a healthy, safe and lively whole school community. The programme provides a framework and support for nurseries, schools, colleges and academies to help them put an accredited travel plan in place. It rewards educational establishments for their achievements and commitment to sustainable forms of travel. We are embarking on our School Travel Plan journey by using the Modeshift STARS programme, supported by Hertfordshie County Council.

Agora learning Partnership have Trust wide Climate Action Plan Priorities. Priority One is decarbonisation and a focus on creating and reviewing travel plans in all the Trust's schools. Not only does this encourage sustainable travel methods but also supports Creswick's passion for children being as fit and healthy as they can by regularly taking part in exercise both in school and at home with friends and families.

We will be asking families for support to complete our travel plan by suggesting ideas, completing surveys and taking part in regular initiatives focusing on better and healthier travel options.

The draft Travel Policy available through the next tab, will be submitted to governors in the Autumn term and shared with children, staff and families. Please do look out for updates here and on our Facebook page.

Creswick Academy is situated in a relatively new housing estate in Welwyn Garden City.

There are many alleyways and shortcuts that can be used to access Creswick by foot.
