Academy Governing Body (Local Governance)

The Role of a School Governor

School governors play a vital part in supporting our school. They work as a team with the headteacher and staff to help make important decisions about the school’s direction, resources, and priorities. Governors don’t manage the day-to-day running of the school – instead, they focus on the bigger picture, ensuring every child gets the best possible education.

Governors:

  • Help set the school’s vision and values.
  • Monitor progress and standards.
  • Support and challenge the leadership team.
  • Make sure resources are used wisely.

Governing boards in academy trusts

School governors of an academy sit on a local/academy governing board (L/AGB) within a multi academy trust (MATs). Technically speaking, L/AGBs are committees of the MAT’s board of trustees. They have been delegated responsibilities for overseeing a particular school within the MAT.

How to Become a Governor

Anyone with an interest in education and a desire to make a difference can apply to be a school governor. You don’t need to be an expert – just committed, willing to learn, and able to give some time. Governors come from all walks of life, bringing different skills and experiences.
